Top 5 Reasons ObamaCare is Bad for Doctors

Monday, June 25, 2012

The Heritage Foundation has put together a summary of why ObamaCare is bad for doctors. In each case, what it bad for doctors is also bad for our patients. Among the reasons ObamaCare is bad for doctors:

  1. Adds more patients to Medicaid. ObamaCare expands Medicaid enrollment by nearly 20 million people. Because Medicaid pays about 56% of what private insurance pays, this expansion will strain physician practices and actually threatens patients' ability to receive care as doctors become less able to treat Medicaid patients due to the financial strain of ObamaCare.
  2. Leaves the Flawed Medicare Payment Plan in Place. Despite spending trillions of dollars over the coming decades, ObamaCare failed to address the looming Medicare payment cuts. Without a permanent fix to the payment formula, Medicare patients run the risk their doctors may stop seeing Medicare patients altogether.
  3. Creates IPAB. IPAB will further cut payments to doctors and deny patients the ability to receive life saving and life sustaining treatments that they need. In addition, IPAB's decisions could result in the denial of important medical treatment that provides enhanced quality of life to many patients.
